It is with deep sadness that Reading Football Club announces the passing of former Reading Manager, Charlie Hurley, at 87.

Charlie Hurley, renowned for his prowess as a centre-half, enjoyed a distinguished career spanning 550 league appearances. His journey unfolded across spells at Millwall, Sunderland, and Bolton Wanderers from 1953 to 1971. Notably, his time at Roker Park saw him accumulate over 400 professional appearances, endearing him to fans in the North East during his remarkable 12-year tenure in the red and white.

Transitioning from player to manager, Hurley made his mark in Berkshire when he assumed leadership of the Royals in 1972. Early in his managerial tenure, he faced the daunting challenge of guiding his team through an FA Cup 4th round home fixture against Arsenal at Elm Park. Despite a valiant effort, his side succumbed to a commendable 2-1 defeat against the formidable Gunners lineup of the era, witnessed by over 20,000 supporters.

In subsequent FA Cup campaigns, Hurley’s leadership led to memorable clashes, including a poignant 1-1 draw against Sunderland at Elm Park, offering Hurley a sentimental homecoming at Roker Park. His tenure also saw the acquisition of cult hero Robin Friday, whose mercurial talent bolstered the team’s fortunes. Under Hurley’s guidance, the Biscuitmen achieved promotion from the fourth tier in the 1975-76 season before his departure in February 1977.

A figure who etched indelible memories and left an enduring legacy in the local community, our heartfelt condolences extend to Charlie’s family and friends.
