Reading dealt a devastating blow to Blackpool’s aspirations for a League One play-off spot, concluding a challenging season with a resounding victory on the pitch.
Blackpool entered the match needing favorable outcomes elsewhere and a victory of their own to secure a top-six finish. They got off to an ideal start when Karamoko Dembele redirected a Kyle Joseph touch into the net past goalkeeper Joel Pereira.
However, the tide turned against them as results from other matches went against them, and Reading, rejuvenated, erased the deficit. Sam Smith rose to nod home a header from a superb Harvey Knibbs delivery, levelling the score.
Reading’s dominance continued into the second half, despite Hayden Coulson’s missed opportunity for Blackpool. The hosts eventually capitalized on their momentum. Knibbs expertly found the top corner with a composed finish, assisted by Sam Smith and Mamadi Camara. Shortly after, Femi Azeez extended Reading’s lead, calmly slotting home from a dangerous left-wing cross.
In the dying moments, Jordan Gabriel capitalized on a poor clearance by Pereira, netting a late consolation goal for Blackpool. Despite appeals for a penalty after Albie Morgan’s cross appeared to strike a hand, the referee waved play on.
The final whistle, following seven minutes of added time, dashed Blackpool’s hopes of a 10th play-off campaign in their history.
Despite facing adversity stemming from owner Dai Yongge’s issues and on-field struggles, Reading managed to secure a commendable midtable finish. From being 10 points adrift and rooted to the bottom of the table in November, Ruben Selles and his squad orchestrated an impressive turnaround. Key signings such as Smith, Knibbs, and Wing, coupled with Azeez’s blossoming talent, propelled Reading’s resurgence.
While Neil Critchley guided Blackpool to play-off success in the 2020-21 season, he couldn’t replicate that feat this time, despite keeping their hopes alive until the final day. The Tangerines’ future hinges on their ability to replace or re-sign loanees like Bakayoko, Byers, and Coulson, who played crucial roles in their near-promotion push.
