In a week filled with exhilarating hockey action at Cantley Park, South Berkshire’s Veterans showcased their unwavering determination, battling to a captivating 5-5 draw against British Airways in the opening match of the day. Their performance set the stage for an enthralling lineup of games that had fans on the edge of their seats.

Following their gripping encounter, the Men’s Second Team took to the field, engaging in a hard-fought clash with Newbury. Despite their valiant efforts, they narrowly fell 0-1 to their opponents in a match characterized by relentless competition from start to finish.

Stepping up next, the Men’s Third Team displayed their prowess, securing a thrilling 3-2 victory against Wootton Wanderers in a mid-table showdown. Steven Bearwood, Tom Ellwood, and Andy Sonden etched their names in the score sheet, showcasing both their skill and determination.

However, the day’s most anticipated match featured South Berkshire’s Ladies First Team, facing off against the formidable second-placed Winchester. In an intense showdown, Liz Zutshi managed to equalize with her third consecutive goal after her team initially fell behind to an early penalty flick. The game continued its seesaw battle as both sides traded goals, including well-executed penalty flicks. Bee Rooke left her indelible mark on the score sheet.

Despite moments of contention, Winchester ultimately clinched victory, winning 2-3 and bringing an end to South Berkshire’s unbeaten start to the season.

As the sun set and the floodlights lit up the pitch, the Men’s Sixth Team faced off against Wallingford in a gripping encounter that culminated in a hard-fought 1-1 draw. Jack Hithens’ late goal secured a valuable point for the Berks under misty and foggy conditions.

In away fixtures, South Berkshire’s Men’s First Team locked horns with the league leaders, Reading. An early goal by Josh Cowel sent shockwaves through the home team’s ranks, but Reading quickly bounced back, eventually securing a 4-2 victory. Sam Fox Harvey’s penalty flick and subsequent goal provided a glimmer of hope, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Reading’s resolute defense.

Meanwhile, the Men’s Fourth Team treated fans to an entertaining clash at Abingdon, resulting in a thrilling 3-3 draw. Goals from Duncan Clarke, Justin Paterson, and Mike Baylis showcased their attacking prowess.

On the flip side, the Men’s Fifth Team faced a narrow 1-2 defeat against Newbury, with Oliver Field making his presence felt with a well-executed goal.

In the realm of ladies’ hockey, the second and third teams faced formidable opponents, succumbing to defeats against Oxford Hawks (0-3) and Amersham (0-2), respectively.

In stark contrast, South Berkshire’s Ladies Fourth Team continued their unrelenting dominance with a commanding 5-0 win against Windsor. Their unbeaten streak at the top of the league remained intact, with Claire Owen’s brace and goals from Emily McCulloch and Sophie McCullock further cementing their position as the league leader
