Woodley Lunch Bunch was set up in the summer of 2020 in response to the financial impact on families during the pandemic. Today Woodley Lunch Bunch support families by providing meals during school holidays.

Food price rises in the UK could hit 15% this summer – the highest level in more than 20 years – with inflation lasting into the middle of next year, according to a report.
Meat, cereals, dairy, fruit and vegetables are likely to be the worst affected as the war in Ukraine combines with production lockdowns in China and export bans on key foodstuffs such as palm oil from Indonesia and wheat from India, the grocery trade body IGD warns.

Woodle Lunch Bunch operate a packed lunch delivery service to children during the school holidays. They deliver during school holiday time to families in Woodley (RG5) who are having a difficult time financially, or in other ways. We also deliver activity packs, toiletry/hygiene parcels and food packages when possible. Originally founded in 2020 in response to the Coronavirus pandemic and the precarious financial situation people found themselves in we are unfortunately still seeing that need in 2022.

Food Poverty in the UK
In the UK being in work does not necessarily mean you will live above the breadline. A study of 400 users of Trussell Trust Foodbanks showed that 1 in 6 households had someone in work.
What is food poverty?
Food poverty encompasses both the affordability of food and its accessibility within local communities. There is no agreed definition but here are three interpretations that Sustain believes set out the scope of the problem:
‘The inability to afford, or to have access to, food to make up a healthy diet.’
The Department of Health
‘Food poverty is worse diet, worse access, worse health, higher percentage of income on food and less choice from a restricted range of foods.’
Professor Tim Lang
‘The inability to consume an adequate quality or sufficient quantity of food in socially acceptable ways, or the uncertainty that one will be able to do so.’
Professor Elizabeth Dowler
