A day centre for the elderly staged their summer fair this weekend and it was described as being like a garden party.
The WADE Day Care Centre, which provides services, care and meals for residents in the borough, hosted the event at their Reading Road ‘home’ and included lots of attractions including a plant sale provided by Friends of Wade, craft stalls, tombolas and refreshments. There was a barbecue and there was music from local Woodley ukulele band, No Strings Attached, who played for the duration of the event.
The raffle also had some excellent prizes with donations from Mysk Catering, Zappas, Wokingham Leisure Centre, Bond Brews Ltd and The Wheelwrights Arms which were all gratefully received.

Elaine Anderson, admin support for WADE, said: “We all had a lovely day, the weather was very kind to us and it felt like a garden party. People had a good sing song and enjoyed the cakes on offer. We had some wonderful craft stalls manned and stocked by some very talented local craftspeople.

“The event was open to everyone throughout the community. We are a close-knit ‘family’ so we had people visit who are considering coming and we had people whose family members came 20 years ago. Lots of our members came and brought their family and friends and were in no hurry to go, just enjoying the atmosphere.”

And Elaine said although the day raises money for the centre, that is just a bonus and it is more about bringing the community together and showcasing what WADE is all about.

WADE is a local charity offering support to anyone over 60 in Wokingham and the surrounding areas.
They provide a warm and friendly environment for members to mix and socialise. Some simply go along for lunch and a change of scene from their own home and the opportunity to see friends. Others have the early stages of dementia, and a day out in safe, caring and stimulating surroundings allows their caregivers some much-needed respite. Through the charity, they are able to offer subsidised day care. For more details, call 0118 978 7025 or visit www.wadecentre.org.uk
