Wokingham lovers of literature are being called on to help raise funds for a local day centre for the elderly.

Colleagues at Tesco’s Finchampstead Road Superstore have chosen the WADE day centre to benefit from its fundraising bookshelf this month.

The bookshelf enables customers to donate unwanted books at the store or take a book and leave a
donation, with September and October’s proceeds going towards the work of the centre.

Louise Jedras, Community Champion at the Tesco Superstore, said: “Our fundraising bookshelf has many benefits – it prevents unwanted books going into landfill, benefits a local charity, and keeps adults and children reading for whatever amount of money they wish to donate. My colleagues and I keep the bookshelf looking neat and tidy throughout the week, and I keep it topped up with some of the bigger donations of books I have received. The goblet of donations is emptied regularly so we can keep an eye on how much is being raised.
“I would like to encourage all customers to come in and have a look at the bookshelf to see if
anything takes their fancy. If anything does, please do read it, leave a donation and drop off any
spare books you have.  The bookshelf is located near the foodbank drop-off point by the checkouts. For larger donations of books, please take those to the customer service desk.”
A spokesman from WADE said: “We are thrilled to be the nominated charity for the Tesco Community Bookshelf during September and October. When you are next shopping in Tesco you can pick up a good read and support Wade at the same time. We thank you all for your support.”

WADE is a local charity offering support to anyone over 60 in Wokingham and the surrounding areas.

They provide a warm and friendly environment for members to mix and socialise. Some simply come along for lunch and a change of scene from their own home and the opportunity to see friends. Others have the early stages of dementia, and a day out in safe, caring and stimulating surroundings allows their caregivers some much-needed respite. Through the charity, they are able to offer subsidised day care.
